Glennville sits in the coastal plain of southeastern Georgia, in Tattnall County, about fifty miles west of Savannah. It is the largest city in the county and functions as its commercial and residential center. The area is surrounded by farmland and forest, with the Altamaha River about ten miles to the southwest and Beards Creek forming the boundary with Long County to the east, just beyond which lies the edge of the vast Fort Stewart military installation. The city's identity is rooted in one crop above all: the Vidalia sweet onion. Tattnall County grows more Vidalia sweet onions than any other official growing county, producing roughly half of Georgia's entire crop each year, and Glennville celebrates that heritage with the annual Glennville Sweet Onion Festival. The event, now running for decades, draws thousands of visitors to town and has made the onion a defining symbol of the community and its economy. Glennville also carries a sense of history. The Glennwanis Hotel, built in 1926 in the downtown, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the community's older school buildings reflect a long civic investment in education. Southeastern Technical College maintains a presence in the city, extending the local education landscape beyond the public K–12 system. As a small city with strong agricultural roots and a position near both Savannah and Fort Stewart, Glennville offers an affordable, community-centered way of life. U.S. Route 301, which runs through the center of town and connects north to Interstate 16, keeps the city tied to the wider coastal Georgia region while preserving its distinctly rural, small-town character.
